2007 - 2008 School Year

Volunteer Hours

All students and parents are required to complete monthly volunteer hours. Students are required to complete 5.0 hours per month and parents are required to complete 2.0 hours per month. Hours can be earned by volunteering for school related activities, helping a non-profit organization, working on community projects, etc. Hours do not count if you receive money for the work that you have done. Hours are to be turned in to the school by the 5th day of each month for the preceding month.

Parents may also contribute goods or services in lieu of volunteer hours. All goods and services need to be approved prior to donation by the school Principal. For every fifteen dollars ($15) in goods or services that are donated, parents will receive a credit of one volunteer hour.

Committee Chairpersons that are working on different projects for the school are listed on the school website. Contact them directly for volunteer opportunities. Periodically volunteer information is also listed on the website and sent to parents in school emails.

Extreme Eagle Team - Volunteer Hours

Volunteer hours are one of the many categories that a student needs to achieve in order to be part of the Extreme Eagle Team. Volunteer hours for the Extreme Eagle Team are treated different from the volunteers hours listed above in that students need to have a set amount of hours completed and turned into the school by the schedule listed below (not on a monthly basis or by the 5th of the month). Volunteer hours for this program are cumulative, so if a student does not qualify for one quarter, they will need to have the total amount of volunteer hours that are listed completed in order to be eligible for the next quarter. If a student does not turn in their volunteer hour forms by the due date, then they are not eligible for the Extreme Eagle Team for that quarter. No exceptions!

1st QuarterTotal Hours = 5.0Hours Due by End of Day - October 18, 2007
2nd QuarterTotal Hours = 17.5Hours Due by End of Day - January 11, 2008
3rd QuarterTotal Hours = 27.5Hours Due by End of Day - March 20, 2008
4th QuarterTotal Hours = 37.5Hours Due by End of Day - April 30, 2008

MEMORANDUM OPINION
TO: Jennifer Rippner, Charter School Accountability Center
FROM: Daniel Woodring
General Counsel
SUBJECT: Charter school authority to enforce parent volunteer contracts

QUESTION PRESENTED: Can a charter school deny enrollment to a student whose parent has failed to fulfill the volunteer hours as outlined in the parent volunteer contract for the previous year?

DISCUSSION: Section 1002.33(10)(e)5., F.S., states that a "charter school may limit the enrollment process only to target the following student populations:...[s]tudents who meet reasonable academic, artistic, or other eligibility standards established by the charter school and included in the charter school application and charter or, in the case of existing charter schools, standards that are consistent with the school’s mission and purpose."

Consequently, if a new charter school includes the parent volunteer requirement in its application and charter, or if the requirement is consistent with the mission and purpose in an existing charter school, the parent volunteer contract is enforceable under Florida law. Failure of a parent or parents to uphold or fulfill their responsibilities under that contract would be sufficient grounds for that charter school to deny admission to the child the following year.

CONCLUSION: A charter school may deny enrollment to a student whose parent has failed to fulfill the volunteer hours as outlined in the parent volunteer contract for the previous year.
