Welcome to the webpages for the Student Leadership Academy of Venice Florida, this site is primarily for students and their families to help them in their educational goals as it relates to our facility.
This website is continually in the building stages and input is welcome from students, from their families, and from our staff and faculty. Send your suggestions/contributions to the Webmaster.
SLA is about learning and volunteerism as a way of contributing back to our communities, a way of instilling good citizenship skills, and to foster the feeling of community and participation and the esteem that we build in ourselves as we contribute to our society.
We hope you will find something worthwhile here, something of benefit for ourselves, and something to offer to others.
All submissions for the website go through Carolyn Smugorzewski or Gary Allain and the preferred method is in electronic form (that's email folks), but paper submission is fine also, it just means it has to be converted for use here and will add to the time it takes to prepare it for the website. A simple text file can be pasted into an email, or you can attach an MSWord document to an email, both are easy ways of getting the information to us.

Important Changes/Additions to SLA School Policies
Four years ago, Student Leadership Academy opened its doors with 160 students; this year we will open with over 240. We are thrilled with the growth in the student population and with our performance. For the second year in a row, we have earned an A rating.
As with any organization, growth necessitates change in some procedures. SLA is no exception. In order to ensure the highest level of safety and the best academic instruction for your children, we will implement the following changes/additions to our policies and procedures.
While we understand that students sometimes need to check out early for appointments, they will no longer be allowed to check out between 1:45 and 2:15 p.m. Students cannot be checked out early for the sole purpose of avoiding the carpool loop. This problem created serious disruptions in classroom instruction during 8th period.
SLA will always maintain an open door policy for parents. However, as our student population increases, it becomes more difficult for every staff person to know every parent. Therefore, we will continue to allow parents to walk in with their children, drop off projects, etc. However, when the 7:30 bell rings, parents must leave the building or have a visitor badge. All other visitors will be required to wear a visitor badge.
Sarasota County’s attendance policy indicates that students should be in school unless they are ill. SLA must comply with this policy. Independent work study agreements are designed for emergencies and deaths, not for family trips to Walt Disney World, etc. Families need to plan family vacations for holidays and breaks from school.
Reminders of Existing Policies
Students are expected to dress in uniform at all times, unless they have earned a casual day. As a reminder, the only sweatshirts allowed are plain red, white, or navy blue sweatshirts (no logos allowed) or SLA sweatshirts (sold by Builders Club).
Students are not allowed to use cell phones on campus for any reason. They must be turned off and in their backpacks during school hours (not in purses or pockets).
The following consequences will be enforced if phones are seen or heard:
1) verbal warning
2) phone goes to Ms. Marble until the end of the school day,
3) phone goes to Ms. Marble until the parent comes in to pick it up,
4) if it happens a fourth time, the phone stays in the office until the last day of school.
Parents are not to call their child during the school day. If you have an emergency, please call the office and a message will be given to your child to call you from the school phone. If your child’s cell phone is used as a home phone, or for checking in after school, it is especially important that your student complies with the school board policy regarding cell phone use as we will not make exceptions to this rule. And just for the record, cell phones may not be used in the restrooms. The same basic policy applies to IPods and all other electronic devices.
Again, we want the best for your children. We appreciate your cooperation in supporting these and all policies and procedures at SLA.
